December 2006

Dear McQuaid Jesuit Alumnus:

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I’d like to invite you to start the new year off by joining the McQuaid Alumni Association for the 2007 McQuaid Jesuit Alumni Family Morning of Reflection. It’s Saturday, Jan. 13, and it’s a great chance to get back to your roots and ponder the spiritual side of life in the tradition of St. Ignatius.

Fr. Edward Salmon, S.J., Faculty Chaplain and Community Superior, is leading the reflection. At 9 a.m., there will be bagels and coffee outside the McQuaid Student Chapel. At 9:30 a.m., the Reflection begins inside the chapel. You may register here

FIELD HOUSE HAPPENINGS
Congratulations to classmates Chris Schott, ’84, and Dan Mahar, ’84. Chris recently matched Dan and Kiki Mahar’s $50,000 capital campaign challenge. The gifts go toward the DiMarco Field House lobby, which the Mahars are naming Keenan Hall, in honor of former McQuaid president James F. Keenan, S.J.

Back row, third from left: Dan Mahar, '84, surrounded by his boys, and his mom, Mary Kay Mahar and dad, Ray Mahar, and flanked by Fr. Fischer and Bill Wynne. Back row, third from right: Chris Schott, '84, to the right of his dad, Charles, and behind his mom, Mary Ann, and with his daughters.

Chris and Dan also wanted to honor their parents, so they recently invited them to the school and presented them with a special plaque that will be permanently displayed in Keenan Hall. The plaque states, “Generous support towards the completion of Keenan Hall was made in honor of Raymond & Mary Kay Mahar and Charles & Mary Ann Schott.”

Thanks so much to Chris, Dan and their families. We really appreciate all of their generous support…

ALUMNI ATHLETIC GATHERINGS
Start your Christmas vacation off right on Friday, Dec. 22. McQuaid basketball (3-2) takes on undefeated Aquinas (8-0) at 7:30 p.m. inside Rochester Institute of Technology’s Clark Gymnasium. Clark Gym can hold 2,000 people, so there will be tickets available at the door for $5. The Knights are feeling a bit overlooked and underestimated, and they’re aiming to make a statement…

Also check out another can’t miss matchup on Saturday, Dec. 30, when the hockey Knights (5-2) play Aquinas (6-1) at 7 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena. This is a matchup of among the two strongest hockey teams in the region, and if you miss this one, it’s quite possible you might never forgive yourself. Check out the nice McQuaid ice hockey website

On Friday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m., the McQuaid Alumni Association is hosting its annual winter alumni sports reception before the basketball Knights play Marshall. Come enjoy some pizza, wings and beverages in Fr. Fischer Hall before heading down to the gym to watch the Knights avenge their early season loss to the Jurists. Tickets for the game and reception are $10 apiece. Children under 12 are $3. You will be able to register online soon…

Stuart MacKenzie, ’80, Brian Felber, ’94, and hockey coach Al Vyverberg are organizing the annual McQuaid Alumni Hockey Game, which will occur during the Bob Schwartz Memorial Hockey Tournament at R.I.T. Jan. 26-27. The weekend will also honor the 25 th anniversary of the 1981-’82 team’s Section V title and the 10 th anniversary of the 1996-’97 team’s Section V title. For more details, contact MacKenzie or Felber

Longtime McQuaid wrestling coach, teacher and administrator John Roselli, ’60, will be inducted into the Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame February 13, joining Phil Lanzatella, ’79 (2000 inductee), and Rich Salamone, ’76, (2003 inductee). If you would like to attend the event, click here

ANNUAL FUND UPDATE
We’ve been sending letters and hitting the phones during our peak fund-raising season. My thanks to varsity baseball coach Bill Bowe and varsity soccer coach Ken Wilkin for organizing team Phonathon nights, giving their players an opportunity to contact alumni on behalf of McQuaid Jesuit. Check out the pictures.

The student phonathons provide a chance for our kids to receive some real, first-time business experience in personal selling and communications. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the young men,” said Wilkin. The students ranged from seventh through 12 th graders.

Thanks to all alumni who’ve made a gift to the 2006-’07 McQuaid Jesuit Annual Fund. Your donations help cover the approximate $2,000-per-student gap that exists between an individual’s tuition and the actual operating costs per student.

We are so grateful for our alumni’s continual support.

Also, for your perusal, I have posted information from Vice President of Advancement Bill Wynne, '64, regarding the impact of recent tax law changes and potential gifts stemming from IRAs. There are many wonderful benefits to donors and institutions with these latest laws.

Of course, if you wish to make a gift to McQuaid Jesuit and receive a 2006 tax deduction, you have until Dec. 31. Thanks again for your generosity. It’s greatly appreciated. Click here for a slideshow on life at McQuaid and for more information on our giving programs.

BULL ROAST A GREAT SUCCESS
The fourth-annual Fr. Hogenkamp Bull Roast occurred on Thanksgiving Eve. About 140 McQuaid alums packed the Hogenkamp Auditorium for an evening of beef, beverages and Sabres hockey on the big screen. It was terrific.

Thanks to the McQuaid Alumni Association and particularly, association president Scott Cottier, ’90, vice president Colin Byrnes, ’98, treasurer Joe Talbot, ’92, alumni council member Mike Linehan, ’98, and sponsors, Camille’s Sidewalk Café (Linehan), Landmark Insurance Group (Chris Shea, ’98), and My Computer Guy (Brian Roets, ’98).

I always have fun at the Bull Roast. Net proceeds benefit the Fr. Hogenkamp Endowment Fund for Faculty Development

WIN $10,000
Tickets are now available for the BASH $10,000 raffle. Just 1,000 tickets will be sold and there is potential for you to win one of 41 cash prizes totaling more than $20,000.

QUICK HITS
We're finalizing details for a Florida alumni reunion during the first week of February. I'll let you know more about it soon... I recently made the message board public so you can take a look at it. However, if you wish to post, you are required to register. You must be an identifiable McQuaid alumnus to post. If you register, you’ll receive a McQuaid Alumnus window stickerReunion Weekend 2007 is June 22-23 for classes ending in ‘2’ or ‘7’. Save that date.
